Target Audience:  K-5 Mathematics Teachers, Middle Grades Math Teachers (4-8), SPED Teachers (K-5)

Number Relationships/Algebra is Course 2 of 3 in the series.

This 60 hour (6 Professional Learning Units—PLU) course is the second of a three course series. It is designed to engage participants in the study of the concepts of number relationships and algebra. The course will provide instructional and reflective opportunities in the relationships of numbers and organization of algebra concepts as defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards with a focus on K-5 mathematics Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). The course design includes reading, research, discussion, synthesis of knowledge, generation of new questions and artifacts, reflection, evaluation, and assessment. This course will provide a strong emphasis on teaching K-5 mathematics students and the development of increasing teachers’ content knowledge.

With instructor guidance, candidates will explore each standard concept. Candidates will evaluate their knowledge level and identify areas in which they need additional information or understanding. They will investigate topics through a variety of methods including textbook assignments, guided instructor questions, online database searches, demonstrations, online video, etc.

Authentic Residency Requirement:

An authentic residency is a supervised real application of knowledge and skills occurring in a classroom setting. The authentic residency requires candidates to apply knowledge and demonstrate skills in three separate grade bands: K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. Candidates must teach lessons in the areas of Number

Relationships (preferably*NBT or *NF), Algebra (*OA), and Geometry (*G). Candidates are expected to apply knowledge in settings where students are diverse in terms of ethnicity, linguistics, gender, and socioeconomics. In order to meet the goals of the residency, some assignments will require candidates to assess, observe, or teach students in classes other than their own and possibly in another school in order to ensure diverse K-5 experiences.

This means the candidates will be observed in a classroom setting during this class using the observational tools shared with the candidates.

All artifacts of the Authentic Residency component of this course must be electronically submitted to the instructor for evaluation and submission to Chattahoochee-Flint RESA.

Class dates are as follows:

Face to Face: November 14, December 5 and 12, January 9 and 23

Online: November 7, 21, and 28, December 19 and 26, January 3 and 16
