Target Audience: Math teachers, academic coaches, administrators, co-teachers,
paraprofessionals, special education teachers, etc. who are interested in coaching a
MATHCOUNTS team for their middle school

Instructors: Betty Jean Jordan, MATHCOUNTS Coordinator
Angie Brunson, Chattahoochee-Flint RESA Math Specialist/Mentor

CF RESA is proud to partner with MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide program to build excellence in and enthusiasm for math among middle school students (6th through 8th grades). MATHCOUNTS builds problem solving skills among young people in a fun and engaging way.
The national MATHCOUNTS organization provides free coaching materials to all middle schools in the country: public, private, and home schools. Schools that register for the competition series receive additional coaching resources. To learn more about MATHCOUNTS, please visit www.mathcounts.org.
MATHCOUNTS has 13 chapters across Georgia. This is an orientation meeting to see the
interest for the 2024-2025 school year. Schools compete at the chapter level in February.
Top teams and individuals advance to the state competition in March. The national competition is held in May.
Betty Jean is the MATHCOUNTS coordinator for the Middle Georgia chapter and also for the state. Her goal is to reach middle schools in the Chattahoochee-Flint RESA area and
encourage them to participate in the chapter competitions. This orientation meeting is designed to peak interest and start thinking now toward the February 2025 competitions. The key to participation is having an adult coach who champions MATHCOUNTS at a particular school. Often the coach is a teacher, but it can be an administrator, parent, or
community volunteer.
The Georgia MATHCOUNTS Foundation (GMF) coordinates Georgia's competitions. They also have some funds available to pay for school registration fees. GMF scholarships cover the following:
- 100% of competition registration fees for up to 8 students in Title 1 schools in any year
- 50% of competition registration fees for up to 8 students in non-Title 1 schools that
have never participated in MATHCOUNTS or that have not participated in the past
three years
Note that while a maximum of 12 students per school can register for the competition, an
unlimited number of students can participate in MATHCOUNTS practices throughout the school year, even if they don't go to the competition.
Please plan to attend this orientation as it will be a fun-filled engaging morning of
MATHCOUNTS activities and information to begin August 2025 planning and preparing for the February competition.
